Early waterfowl hunting dates set at Turtle Creek Reservoir
The early waterfowl season hunting schedule has been established for Turtle Creek Reservoir in Sullivan County. The 1,550-ace reservoir provides cooling water for Hoosier Energy's Merom Generating Station.
The September hunting season for Canada geese and teal is scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday: Sept. 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21 and 22. Drawing for blinds will be conducted at 5:30 a.m. with hunting beginning one-half hour before sunrise and ending at noon.
Hunters will be charged a user fee of $1 per day for persons 16 years old and under and for those over 65 years of age. All others will be charged $3 per day.
A valid hunting license and appropriate stamps are necessary to hunt at the reservoir. Waterfowl hunters must register with the Harvester Information Program (HIP) and the HIP number is to be recorded on the license. All other state and federal waterfowl regulations apply. Hunters must use state approved shot.
Upland game hunting is not permitted at the reservoir or any other Hoosier Energy properties. Wind speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour will cause the reservoir to be closed until conditions improve and security authorizes resumption.
Fishing will be allowed on scheduling hunting days until 4 a.m. and resume at noon. No fishing allowed between 4 a.m. and noon on those days.
Hoosier Energy, the power supplier to 18 electric cooperatives in Indiana and Illinois, owns the Merom Generating Station and Turtle Creek Reservoir.
