Early waterfowl hunting dates set for Turtle Creek Reservoir

SULLIVAN, INThe early waterfowl season hunting schedule has been established for Turtle Creek Reservoir in Sullivan County. The 1,550-ace reservoir provides cooling water for Hoosier Energy's Merom Generating Station.

The September hunting season for Canada geese and teal is scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays as follows:

Early Goose: Sept. 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15

Early Teal: Sept. 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20

Drawing for blinds takes place at 5:30 a.m. with hunting beginning one-half hour before sunrise and ending at noon.

Fees: $3 per day. $1 per day for those either 65 years old and over, or 16 years old and under.

A valid hunting license and appropriate stamps are necessary to hunt at the reservoir. Waterfowl hunters must register with the Harvester Information Program (HIP) and the HIP number must be recorded on the license. All other state and federal waterfowl regulations apply.

Hunters must use state approved shot. Upland game hunting is not permitted at the reservoir or on any other Hoosier Energy properties. If wind speeds exceed 30 miles per hour, the reservoir will be closed until conditions improve and security authorizes reopening of the reservoir.

Fishing is allowed on scheduled hunting days until 4 a.m. and resumes at noon. No fishing is allowed between 4 a.m. and noon on those days.

Hoosier Energy, the power supplier to 18 electric cooperatives in Indiana and Illinois, owns the Merom Generating Station and Turtle Creek Reservoir.
