TAPPING INTO THE POWER OF THE SUN
Cooperatives bring solar power to local communities
Dale, IN - Officials from Southern Indiana Power and Dubois REC dedicated a new solar array near I-64 today that will turn sunshine into electricity for homes and businesses throughout southern Indiana.
The 4,100-panel array just north of the Dale interchange on Interstate 64 is capable of generating one megawatt, enough electricity to power about 150 homes annually. Southern Indiana Power and Dubois REC worked alongside Hoosier Energy, the electric cooperatives’ power supplier, to identify a prime location for the array.
“As a cooperative, our focus is always local, so we are excited to add this renewable energy resource right in our own backyard to Hoosier Energy’s generation mix,” said Steve Seibert, President and CEO of Southern Indiana Power, which serves 7,000 members.
“Thanks to this project, we are in a better position to learn together how best to tap into the power of the sun to bring renewable energy to our communities,” added Don Book, General Manager of Dubois REC, which serves 11,000 members.
The solar array is the fourth of 10 that Hoosier Energy is adding to its renewables portfolio as part of an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy to further the cooperative commitment of affordability, reliability and community.
